COMMENTS ABOUT THIS WEBSITE: I visited SI today
after some 50 yrs. and drove to my former house on Rossville Avenue. It brought
back so many memories. I was amazed to see how much it had changed. I lived to
the right side of an old bar, and across from a small soda shop. All it is now
is condo's
ANY MEMORIES OF STATEN ISLAND TO SHARE? I was
born in the old Richmond Memorial Hospital where my Mom was a nurse. My brother
& sister were born at the Staten Island Hospital, a pity to see what
happened to it. Our home was on the former Indian reservation & whenever
there was a storm, lightening; our house was struck and we had a fire in the
attic. As kids growing up, we found many Indian artifacts from those who lived
there. On many occasions we would get on the Staten Island ferry and visit NJ.
I remember my Dad worked at Brick Motors near South Beach.
WHERE ON THE ISLAND ARE YOU FROM? Rossville,
about 1 block up on the left side of the street from Arthur Kill Road.
I went to School. PS3 and then we moved to NJ
when I was about 9.
ANY OLD FOLKLORE OF STATEN ISLAND TO SHARE? Since
our home was on a former Indian Reservation, we were always told that storms and
lightening strikes were a result of the Past Indians fighting to get us off
there land.
DO YOU HAVE ANY OLD PHOTOS OF STATEN ISLAND? I
will try to locate the many wonderful OLD PHOTOS from my Grandmother and Great
Grandmother and send them to you..
FAVORITE STATEN ISLAND RESTAURANT AND BAR - I
was too young but I remember my Mom talking about the Old Rocking Horse (?)
Bar/Rest. I know it had a large horse statue in front. I wonder whatever
happened to that.

COMMENTS ABOUT THIS WEBSITE: I really found this
website amazing. I always sensed that Native American Indians lived here first.
I am interested in the west shore where there are docks that look about 200
hundred years old or older. I will be moving to the Tides soon and I am very
interested in what went on there many many years ago. I have a beautiful view of
the outerbridge also.
ANY MEMORIES OF STATEN ISLAND TO SHARE? I was
born and raised on Staten Island and I watched it grow and grow. I went to
school in Arochar at St. John Villa and I actually watched the Verrazano Bridge
being built. I could see it from my class room window.
WHERE ON THE ISLAND ARE YOU FROM? Originally my
parents bought their first house in Westerlie for 5,000 dollars. Then we moved
to Grymms Hill area, then we moved to Todt Hill area. I met my husband in
Brooklyn and we raised our family in Eltingville. Now that we are retired we are
moving to the Tides, a 55 and older community right on the water facing the
Outerbridge and as I mentioned there are these incredible old docks just sitting
there. When I look at them I cant help but see a whole other lifetime of
happenings from long ago.
ANY OLD FOLKLORE OF STATEN ISLAND TO SHARE? Along
the years I've heard of stories, but mostly I remember visiting the Conference
House as I exhibited my art work at an art show. There I heard that there was a
soldier that used to appear from time to time and he was from the Revolutionary
days.
DO YOU HAVE ANY OLD PHOTOS OF STATEN ISLAND? No
I don't, and I regret not taking pictures of the many sites that are now torn
down and replaced by a whole new era. When I was 5 years old, I got my tonsils
taken out at the Sunnyside Hospital which was located on Clove Road. The Staten
Island Expressway now runs straight through where it used to be.
FAVORITE STATEN ISLAND RESTAURANT AND BAR - Now
that I will be moving to Charleston, I am totally intrigued with that side of
the island, in which I never ever explored. Z Diner Restaurant is awesome,
especially in nice weather, u can see a magnificent sunset there while eating
outside.

Thanks for preserving the beautiful memories. Staten Island is such a special
memory. We were lucky to live there! ANY MEMORIES OF STATEN ISLAND TO SHARE? I
remember learning how to drive a stick shift on Richmond Ave. There was no
traffic at all. I remember when I learned how to drive needing a map to find my
way around because it was so rural. I remember walking from Mariner's Harbor to
the mall and there were no sidewalks. I remember going to Princess Bay and
sleeping on the beach...carefree. So many great memories. Happy memories when
Staten Island was the perfect place to live.

Great and you should keep adding to it.
ANY MEMORIES OF STATEN ISLAND TO SHARE? Yes but
I will have to think about it a bit.
One thing that really needs to be added is the
huge galla that was known to the Boardwalk in the old days with the original
amusement park and the rented and owned bungalow villages surrounding the area
.....that's how my parents ended up here and so did lots of others. (prior to
the bridge)In fact, my Grandparents eloped to Staten Island because of that area
- my Grandfather's mother owned a bungalow there.

Yes, of course FAVORITE STATEN ISLAND RESTAURANT AND BAR - The Old Tavern on
the Green (really from my parent's days) and one of my favorites was Lucheses
and of course the Country Club was there throughout our entire family history
...and should have never closed! Alfredos the same thing - never should have
closed. And Sophie's "Eldorado" restaurant (it was a club at night)
